To REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT / POPULATION GROWTH?
“Princes Highway West is the major inter-regional transport corridor that connects the communities of south-west of Victoria to ports, airports, road, rail and capital cities in the South-East of Australia.
Major upgrading of the highway is required to improve the efficiencies of transport access for industry to these major population and commercial centres and the ports of Melbourne, Geelong and Portland.
The Federal Government description of an Auslink road and the role/function of the Princes Highway West match perfectly as: linking major population and economic centres and facilitating the movement of people and freight internationally, nationally and between regions. It connects major ports and airport……important road and rail infrastructure links and their intermodal connections.” 1.
“Headline” reasons why Princes Highway West needs duplication and upgrading now:
- The Highway directly services a population of over 350,000 people, 34 cities, towns and communities towards the coast and inland to the Hamilton Highway.
- $6 billion worth of new investment is planned or underway throughout the Great South Coast Region and this needs to be supported and further investment encouraged by efficient and safe transport links. 2.
“The Highway serves a population of over 350,000 people, 34 cities, towns and communities directly on the Highway and over 100 communities towards the coast and inland to the Hamilton Highway.” 4.
